Spring is here. The weather is warm but not hot. The summer crowds have not yet infiltrated the Chesapeake. Time to enjoy the Bay before it gets too oppressive during the summer.
There is actually a lot going on this weekend on the Chesapeake Bay. Rock Hall will host the Annual Rockfish Tournament all weekend. Sunday is the day for the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim to raise money for several organizations. We may actually get to see some of the Rockfish Tournament! And of course, we have our own plans for how to enjoy this late spring weekend.
Friday we will head to the Rhode River, near Galesville, MD. It is about 24 miles. We will pass under the Bay Bridge, past the historic radio towers on Greenbury Point, past Annapolis, and even past the quintessential Thomas Point Lighthouse. Once past Thomas Point, we will alter course slightly to the right to enter the West River and ultimately its first tributary, the Rhode River. Tonight we will anchor in the half-moon depression along the left bank.
Here we will begin
the tastings and assembling the food pairings. Perhaps a little grilled shrimp
and mango or scallops to go with that light white wine. The blush wine might
complement the pasta with pesto nicely. And try some of the full-bodied red
with that Maryland crab soup. Which one did you like? Do you need to
taste them again? That is why it is called a wine tasting!
We will all participate in creating the food pairings and then share our thoughts and tastes as we relax on a spring evening in the cockpit. The comaraderie and the day will fill our spirits, if not our glasses as well!
The next morning we will weigh anchor and head for St. Michaels. St. Michaels is a very cute little town and deserves a little exploration. There are plenty of taverns, restaurants, and shops to keep most anyone busy. There is also the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Dinner will be taken ashore this evening.
Sunday, we will return to Rock Hall by way of Kent Narrows. If all goes well, we will get in a decent hour and make it home before too late...unless of course the sailing is so good that we stay as long as we can.
There are four berths available. Each berth will cost $200. That includes a berth on a my boat, Bay Poet, wine for the tasting, provisioning, fuel, holding tank pump-out, and slip fees in St.Michaels. The responsibility of shopping for provisions will be shared among the crew. Shoppers will be reimbursed at the end of the trip. If you want to put together your own crew and charter your own boat, please ask about pricing to participate in the wine tasting.
