Chesapeake Flotillas

Presents

The Miles River

Hunting Creek and St. Michaels
October 3 - 5, 2008

Fall on the Chesapeake Bay is color, motion, nature, and pleasure!

We will slip our lines Friday morning and head south down past the Swan Point Shoal and through Kent Narrows into Prospect Bay. From there is it onward into Eastern Bay and finally we begin sailing up the Miles River.

Our first night will be an exploration of a “new” anchorage…that is, it is a creek that we have not visited before. We will set up our flotilla raft in Hunting Creek is just a few miles upriver from the ever popular town of St. Michaels. The creek will provide good shelter in nearly any condition. Whether done before setting our hook for the night or after getting underway Saturday morning, a tour up the Miles River is worth the effort! The homes lining the banks are stunning. The tranquility of the river tumbles down its banks like sunshine from above. There is no doubt there will be sounds of pleasant living lifting from our tiny ships this night.

Saturday dawns and the second day of our adventure begins. Tonight our destination is historic St. Michaels but in the meantime, we may as well take advantage of the opportunity to sail. We can head back down river to the Eastern Bay and spend some time sailing between Bloody Point and Tilghman Point. The winds are usually pretty fresh in that 8 mile slot. But do leave time to get back into town at a reasonable hour! We have made very special plans for this evening.

Several of the ladies from FREED along with "Frederick Douglass"During or shortly after dinner, we will be entertained and educated by Female Re-Enactors of Distinction (FREED). They are a group of women from the Washington, DC area who portray primarily African-American women from the Civil War Era. Their characters were real people. These ladies have extensively researched their roles and make excellent presentations at many Civil War events and commemorations in the region. The presentations will consist of music and the spoken word.

After a relaxed breakfast Sunday morning, we will set off to retrace our route through Kent Narrows. Depending on how early we get started, there may be time once again for some daysailing. In any event, we will need to return the boats by 4 PM. It will have been a full weekend and the memories will keep us warm and aroused until our next sailing opportunity.
